The holidays are the busiest shipping weeks of the year, and every carrier has a last day to ship if you want a package to arrive before Christmas. Miss it, and an on-time gift turns into a late one, a frustrated customer and a refund request. Here are the 2026 deadlines from USPS, UPS and FedEx, pulled straight from each carrier's official holiday schedule.
One early note: Hanukkah begins on December 4 this year, earlier than usual, so if you're shipping Hanukkah gifts, plan to send them in late November.

If you're running out of time, these are the final options:
Shipping that late costs more and leaves no room for weather or volume delays. If you can ship a week earlier, do.
USPS recommends these send-by dates for expected delivery before December 25 within the contiguous U.S. (USPS 2026 holiday mailing and shipping dates):
| Service | Send by |
|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | Thursday, December 17 |
| First-Class Mail | Thursday, December 17 |
| Priority Mail | Friday, December 18 |
| Priority Mail Express | Saturday, December 19 |
Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories: First-Class Mail by December 17, Priority Mail by December 18 and Priority Mail Express by December 19. USPS Ground Advantage to and from these areas can take 10 days or more, so check the USPS delivery estimate for the destination ZIP code before you ship.
USPS notes that actual delivery dates can vary based on origin, destination, drop-off time and other conditions.
UPS recommends these last days to ship for delivery on December 24 (UPS 2026 Year-End Holiday Schedule):
| Service | Ship by |

| UPS 3 Day Select | Monday, December 21 |
| UPS 2nd Day Air | Tuesday, December 22 |
| UPS Next Day Air | Wednesday, December 23 |
For a Next Day Air shipment on December 23, you can schedule a UPS On-Call Pickup or Smart Pickup, or drop it off at The UPS Store or a UPS Authorized Service Location.
FedEx lists these last days to ship for arrival by December 24 (FedEx 2026 holiday shipping deadlines):
| Service | Ship by |

| FedEx 2Day and 2Day AM | Tuesday, December 22 |

FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery depend on how many transit days your route takes: Thursday, December 17 for a 5-day route, Friday, December 18 for 4 days, Monday, December 21 for 3 days, Tuesday, December 22 for 2 days and Wednesday, December 23 for 1 day. FedEx puts Ground transit within the contiguous U.S. at 1 to 5 business days (3 to 7 business days to and from Alaska and Hawaii), and you can check your exact route on the FedEx Ground transit map.
FedEx notes these dates are based on its current schedules and are subject to change.
DHL hasn't published 2026 cut-off dates for shipments from the U.S. Its general guidance is to ship 5 to 7 business days before a holiday for destinations on the same continent, and 7 to 10 business days ahead for other continents (DHL holiday shipping guidance).

UPS to Canada and Mexico: UPS Worldwide Express by December 23 to Canada and December 22 to Mexico, and UPS Worldwide Expedited by December 22 to Canada and December 21 to Mexico. For UPS Standard and other countries, check UPS Calculate Time and Cost.
FedEx to Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico: FedEx International Priority by December 23 to Canada, December 22 to Mexico and December 23 to Puerto Rico. FedEx International Economy by December 21 to Canada, December 21 to Mexico and December 22 to Puerto Rico. FedEx's international dates don't include time for customs clearance.
More packages in the network means more chances for loss and damage, and the holidays are the worst time to absorb a lost order. Carrier coverage is limited liability, usually capped well below what the item is worth, and claims go back through the same carrier that lost the package. Shipping insurance from U-PIC covers loss, theft and damage across every carrier you use. If you only need to protect a single package, you can buy coverage for one shipment.
And once the holidays are over, the returns start. Here's how to handle post-holiday returns.
